Existing Situation:

The storage and collection system of solid wastes in the city are either inadequate or inappropriate. There are innumerable informal communal storage locations in the city where the waste is temporarily stored in form of open heaps on the street sides. The city has no proper waste collection and disposal system for municipal or other wastes, causing contamination of soil. Excessive use of pesticides has adversely affected biomass of agriculture land.

Description of Sub Project:

The system of solid waste management has been designed to fill up the supply demand gap by the provision of required machinery and equipment along with development of sanitary landfill over 7-acres of land. Upon completion of the project, the present efficiency of 78% of solid waste management will be raised to 92%; the entire city will have cleaner look with improved environment.

The storage and collection of solid wastes is planned to be split up in two stages, i.e., primary and secondary. In the primary stage, storage will be in the individual premises and the wastes collected from there will be transferred to communal storage units on the streets by means of hand carts or manually.

In the secondary stage, communal storage units will be served by motor vehicles and the wastes shifted to the disposal site.

Sub Project Benefits:

The completion of the project will result in the following benefits:

•   Improvement in the quality of life and health status of urban residents and reduce poverty in the low income and slum areas;

•   To promote balanced economic development and reduce environmental hazards and incidence of water borne diseases.

•   Improvement of urban environmental conditions and quality of life of people living especially in slum areas.

•   Enhanced public health awareness.
